One of the five categories of ‘primary weapons’ in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, submachine guns offer a lightweight and versatile roster, ideally suited to run-and-gun playstyles. There are five SMGs available in Black Ops Cold War at launch, providing plenty of different options for players to try.
The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War SMGs
“SMGs offer more speed and mobility than assault rifles,” writes Activision; “quicker aim down sight times, and smaller hipfire spread. They also typically come with four magazines instead of an assault rifle’s standard three, as they will be expended quicker on average.”
- MP5 (SMG – Alpha): The basic MP5 is one of the firearms which players have automatic access to in Black Ops Cold War. It boasts a particularly high fire rate, better than most other weapons, making it extremely good for players starting out. Indeed, with the right attachments, it may well continue to be a valuable tool for higher-level players too.
- Milano 821 (SMG – Bravo): Unlocked at Level 13, the Milano 821 features higher damage than the MP5, as well as lower recoil, which makes the weapon easier to control. This SMG is a versatile option, with a well-rounded selection of stats.
- AK-47u (SMG – Charlie): A variant of the AK-47 assault rifle, players unlock the AK-47u at Level 19. Its key selling point is its high fire rate. While each individual bullet deals less damage than the Milano, for instance, its fire rate means that its overall damage is very high. However, it does have a drop in accuracy and handling as a result.
- KSP 45 (SMG – Delta): The fourth SMG in Black Ops Cold War is the KSP 45, unlocked at Level 37. This powerful weapon fires in a three-round burst, making it more precise than most other SMGs. Indeed, this also makes it more effective at medium-range, while still boasting the speed and mobility of the category.
- Bullfrog (SMG – Echo): The final SMG is the Bullfrog, which you will unlock at Level 43. While it might not offer the damage or accuracy of other SMGs, the Bullfrog features considerably higher ammo capacity. The standard setup includes a 50-round magazine, with even larger options available as attachments. Additionally, the Bullfrog offers a longer effective range than any other SMG. Indeed, the weapon functions almost as a cross between an SMG and LMG.
