Der Schatten is one of three new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 maps which were recently introduced to the game in Operation Apocalypse Z. While other maps like Havana are bright and airy, Der Schatten is almost the precise opposite; a hectic, nighttime map with an aesthetic influenced heavily by the game’s zombies. Recently, the map was featured for a showcase by Activision, giving fans a deeper look at what they can expect.
New Blacks Ops 4 Maps: What Players Can Expect From Der Schatten
Call of Duty fans may well recognise parts of this new map. After all, Der Schatten takes place in the aftermath of the events of Der Eisendrache; with the wreckage of the giant robot having crashed down into an Austrian village. The Element 115 which powered said robot has spilled from the wreck, causing strange, supernatural phenomena around the site. Although players can spy some zombies behind barriers on this map, this is a multiplayer map, so players can’t actually interact with them.
“Der Schatten has plenty of short and mid-range engagement opportunities from the cobblestone streets to the church and even the guts of the fallen robot,” explains Activision; “Under the cover of night, and with plenty of environment pieces to flank around in this quaint village setting, running and gunning through tight spaces may be a strategy worth considering.”
Although Der Schatten doesn’t feature any zombies, players aren’t the only thing you need to worry about. Indeed, environmental hazards are a threat on this map. Players can actually cause the ruined robot’s fingers to slam down, crushing anybody unlucky enough to be beneath. The robot’s wreck also provides players with a well-positioned sniper nest; one that you can find hidden behind its eye slit. “Der Schatten has more elevation changes like steps, slopes, and even fallen robots that cater to hybrid gameplay,” continues Activision; “[…] Consider combining multiple tactics to hopefully find success wherever you may land on the map.”
