It’s been a while since The Outer Worlds release date was revealed with a new trailer back in June. We now have some fresh news regarding the game and the possible future of the franchise. But unless you are an Xbox gamer, it isn’t good news, because it appears that The Outer Worlds sequel or sequels may end up being Xbox exclusives.
What Mike Booty Said About The Outer Worlds Sequels
You might recall that a couple months back we mentioned in an article regarding Double Fine Productions that Microsoft has been picking up a lot of studios lately, including Obsidian Entertainment. That could have been seen as a prelude to today’s news. While speaking to Game Informer, Xbox Studios head Mike Booty mentioned that he thinks it is possible that there will be future Outer Worlds games, and that Microsoft might consider making them Xbox exclusives.
“From what we’ve seen of Outer Worlds, my hope is that that’s something we can build and that it really becomes an enduring franchise and it really starts to grow and we can help expand that,” Booty said. “I think that it’s a great universe they’ve created and I think about what are the things that you need for a franchise to kind of bear weight? Like what can it withstand? Is it a narrative, is it a set of characters, is it a universe that’s big enough that you could start to add onto it?”
So we probably should have seen this coming, right? When Microsoft picked up Obsidian, surely there were changes in store for the future. But thankfully, it looks like The Outer Worlds will still release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC this October. As to future instalments, we’ll just have to wait and see.
