Upcoming The Witcher: Monster Slayer Gets July Release Date

The Witcher: Monster Slayer, an upcoming AR mobile game developed by CD Projekt -owned Polish studio Spokko, will finally be launching later this month. The game’s newly-announced release date is the 21st of July, with the title launching on both Android and iOS devices. Fans can now pre-register for the game on the Google Play Store.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer Launching This Month

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is certainly an unusual deviation from CD Projekt’s previous Witcher projects. More akin to Pokemon Go in terms of its mechanics, the game is an augmented-reality experience where players hunt for monsters in the real world. The only glimpse of the game that fans have gotten so far was a gameplay trailer released in August 2020. That trailer showcases one minute of combat gameplay; a player wielding a sword against various monsters from the Witcher titles.

The Witcher Monster Slayer July Release Date

Beyond combat, Spokko has indicated that the game will include human NPCs, quests, and story. More specifically, the studio has said that The Witcher: Monster Slayer will offer players; “deep, story-driven adventures inspired by the Witcher series”. Of course, it remains to be seen how well the series will translate to mobile, especially with an AR format. This is the first Witcher game which Spokko has worked on – it’s first game at all, in fact – since the studio was first established by CD PROJEKT Capital Group in 2018.

The people behind Spokko were independent developers who approached CD Projekt with; “an interesting idea based on one of our brands,” according to CD Projekt, and the studio chose to invest in them. Shortly thereafter, Spokko was established as a “largely independent” branch within the CD PROJEKT Group. The Witcher: Monster Slayer was presumably that idea, and has presumably been in development ever since. Now, players will finally be able to try it out for themselves later this month. The game will be launching on mobile devices on the 21st of July.
