THQ Nordic continues its crusade to collect old, dead IP’s but this time with a pair of Atari franchises Alone in the Dark and Act of War. Alone in the Dark is a survival horror series that has a dedicated fanbase for the original games with its most recent title releasing just a few years ago. Act of War, however, is an RTS game that only spawned one entry on PC in 2005.
This was revealed by THQ Nordic in a tweet earlier today and a subsequent press release, announcing the acquisition. The acquisition was finalized by the European publisher with Atari Europe SAS that is based in Paris, France. The handling of the acquisition is specifically being handled by the publisher’s AB studio in Karlstad, Sweden while any potential remakes or sequels are being handled by GmbH in Vienna, Austria.
It remains to be seen if these will be the only two Atari IP’s that THQ Nordic will acquire. Alone in the Dark is a series that began in 1992 on the PC as a Lovecraftian-inspired survival horror series. It has spawned several sequels, the most recent of which was released just a few years ago on PC called Alone in the Dark: Illumination.
Illumination is an online-only title that has been universally panned. Meanwhile, Act of War is an RTS game that released in 2005 with no sequels. It featured pre-rendered cutscenes and an hour of live-action footage with a story penned by New York Times best-selling author Dale Brown.
It remains to be seen what THQ Nordic plans to do with these recently acquired IP’s from Atari. It is entirely possible that we could a remake(s) of some older Alone in the Dark games as well as a remake of Act of War to see if there is any interest in sequels to the two IP’s. For now, we have Darksiders 3 and Generation Zero to look forward to.
