CD Projekt Red held the very first live-stream of Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales earlier this week. The event showcased the game’s true scale to fans for the first time and revealed lots of new information. One interesting reveal which came near the end of the stream was that Eyck of Denesle will appear as a character. Eyck is a character from the original Witcher novels who has never before featured in The Witcher game series.
Eyck of Denesle in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
Eyck of Denesle is a Redanian knight with a gallant, if foolhardy goal; ridding the world of monsters, especially great beasts like manticores and dragons. However, unlike a Witcher, he refuses to accept any payments for his work. Instead, he sees it as his duty as a knight to slay beasts which terrorise the land. He looks down on witchers as dishonourable sellswords, and has some prejudice towards non-humans and magic-users. As a Redanian, it should come as no surprise that he is something of a zealot when it comes to his faith.
Eyck of Denesle appears relatively early in Thronebreaker, on the hunt for a manticore in the realm of Lyria. In the recent live-stream, Queen Meve lent Eyck her aid in slaying the beast, before convincing him to join her army and fight against Nilfgaard. This will be Eyck’s first ever appearance in a Witcher game.
In the novels, he and Geralt did not exactly get on very well. In the Sword of Destiny, Geralt describes him thusly; “Eyck is a match for any monster. He’s even killed manticores and gryphons. He’s dispatched a few dragons, so I’ve heard. He’s good. But he spoils my business, the swine, because he doesn’t take any money for it”. It’s possible that he could feature in the upcoming Witcher series. The dragon Villentretenmerth will be appearing as a character, and Eyck once fought him, though the knight certainly came off worse from the encounter.
Eyck of Denesle’s Thronebreaker Gwent Card
Eyck’s card in Thronebreaker seems to be extremely good at slaying monsters. In the match against the manticore, Eyck was the key to victory. Unlike a normal Gwent match, the manticore was a unique set of 6 cards; each representing one of its different body parts. While the manticore was much stronger than the player’s own cards, every time an allied card takes damage, Eyck’s card strength increases. The player slowly whittled away at the manticore, absorbing damage and thus increasing Eyck’s strength. Eventually, they played him onto the field and dealt his strength as an immediate blow to the manticore’s head, overwhelming it instantly.
