Bethesda is one of the biggest names in the gaming industry; indeed, one which has dominated the RPG genre for well over a decade. Speaking in a recent interview, long-time Bethesda director Todd Howard revealed what he thought the greatest thing Bethesda does is. His answer makes a lot of sense, but probably wouldn’t be immediately obvious to most fans. It isn’t something that Bethesda talks about much, if at all.
The Greatest Thing Bethesda Does
Speaking recently in an interview with Geoff Keighley, Todd Howard explained that Bethesda actually works a lot with charities; namely, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “We have had a lot of [Make-A-Wish children] wish to come to our studio,” he explained; “That’s a good – like, you want a reality check at work – you’re doing your day-to-day and then a family comes in with their child. They can wish for anything and they’ve come to your studio because they want to see how you make their favorite game and they want to play it. And it is by far the greatest thing that we do.”
Howard’s reaction to the charitable work that Bethesda has been involved in is certainly understandable. Experiences such as he describes must be humbling. However, most fans probably won’t have heard of this before; Howard went on to explain that Bethesda prefers to keep its work in this area fairly quiet.
“We don’t talk about it a lot,” he explained; “I am now, but it is a very private thing. The one takeaway is that the family – because they always come in with their family, obviously – they think it’s just a fun ‘this is what my child wants to do,’ but then they see this operation; we have hundreds of people and what we’re doing and how passionate we are, and they have this new connection. They leave with this new connection with their child and it is… it’s seriously magical. It’s the greatest thing we do.”
