Top 5 Video Game Movies We Want to Watch

Most of the popular video game series have their own movies in the works–and not all of them have been good. Regardless, even after watching most of our favorite games ruined in their film adaptations, we are still hoping for the ones which are not out yet to be awesome on the big screen. Here are the five most anticipated movies based on video games we are hoping to watch in the theaters soon.

1) Mortal Kombat

Watching the first adaptation of Mortal Kombat video game back in 1995 being, well, as it was, we are hoping they will not screw this up this time. The Mortal Kombat reboot is very close to becoming reality as Simon McQuoid has already signed on as its director. I am already scared since this is his first directing work but I would like to think of other masterminds bringing masterpieces to life despite the fact that they were new to directing.

Mortal Kombat reboot’s writer is Greg Russo who recently completed a draft of the screenplay. Furthermore, Christopher Lambert who starred in 1995’s Mortal Kombat as Raiden will return for the reboot while he also stated that they have a great idea for this one and it will be very different. He also teased a time travel element added to the concept, which will be fun to watch throughout the unique and memorable Mortal Kombat fights.

2) Gears of War

Microsoft announced the news about a film adaptation of the video game Gears of War during a live stream, which was about the upcoming release of Gears of War 4. Producers Dylan Clark and Scott Stuber are developing the film and have been working on the project for three years now. Moreover, Shane Salerno was hired as screenwriter of the movie.

While we do not know much about how it is going to be, the idea is to not focus the movie on a particular Gears of War game but to combine all the stories of the franchise and make a new story set in the Gears of War universe.

3) The Last of Us

Sony is working on bringing The Last of Us to the big screen, with Sam Raimi as a producer and Neil Druckmann as writer. The latter made an update in January 2015 promising that he will be faithful to the original game script but will make some big changes in the process.

Raimi recently confirmed that he has some creative differences with Druckmann and Sony as far as the direction of the film is concerned. On the other hand, Maisie Williams is rumored to portray the lead character of the film, Ellie, but for now this adaptation does not seem to be going anywhere.

4) Borderlands

Back in 2015 it was announced that a film based on Gearbox and Take-Two’s sci-fi video game Borderlands is in development. We know very little about this future movie, but we’ve heard that it has already finished filming, which gives us hope for at least a 2019 release.

In addition, Lionsgate is the studio that took on this project and Avi Arad with his son Ari Arad are the producers of this adaptation. Let’s hope they do their magic tricks and give us the best Borderlands film adaptation.

5) Call of Duty

I left the best one for last since a Call of Duty film is happening, indeed, and we will be very thrilled to watch it. Activision Blizzard Studios is currently negotiating with Stefano Sollima who they hope will be the director of the film.

Unfortunately, we know little about the content and the story of the film. Rumor has it that it will be a universe designed around the Call of Duty franchise rather than focusing on one specific video game storyline. Whatever it might be, we are excited to watch a Call of Duty movie of any kind as long as it stays true to the original material of the game.
