In a surprise announcement, Creative Assembly has revealed Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai; a standalone re-release of Fall of the Samurai, which was originally released as DLC for Total War: Shogun 2. This will be the second entry in the Total War Saga series, following Thrones of Britannia. In fact, the game is available right now for 75% off on Steam. Plus, all of its DLC (excluding a blood pack) is free for existing owners of Total War: Shogun 2.
The Second Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai
While Creative Assembly is currently focusing on Total War: Three Kingdoms and their ongoing Total War: Warhammer series, the studio also has the Total War Saga series. This series began last year with Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, a game set in Anglo-Saxon England. The Saga games offer the gameplay that fans of Total War are used to, and focus on an; “intense flashpoint of history”. However, the games are generally smaller projects, built using older graphics and game engines. Thrones of Britannia, for example, was built upon the engine of Total War: Attila. Of course, the games are cheaper as a result.
Fall of the Samurai was originally released as a major DLC for Total War: Shogun 2, featuring its own campaign set 400 years later than the original game; “Based on the backdrop of the Boshin War period, the new campaign starts in 1864, a time of growing resentment against Western colonial power and influence”. In a blog post explaining the recent announcement, Creative Assembly explained that; “Fall of the Samurai has been used as a goalpost to inform the development of subsequent Saga titles, and so it only seems right to give the game its own Saga treatment.”
To incentivise gamers to give the new release a try, Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai is currently 75% off on Steam. (This offer will end on Monday the 19th of August.) Plus, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is itself 66% off. Fall of the Samurai features five DLC packs of its own; a blood pack, and four faction packs which each add a new faction to the game. If you own Total War: Shogun 2, all four of these faction packs are currently free. They include the Obama, Saga, Sendai, and Tsu factions.
