Following today’s release of the first Total War Saga: Troy announcement trailer, Creative Assembly has released a second video which showcases the game’s campaign map. The video also highlights the inciting events which led to the Trojan War and introduces several of the game’s heroes.
The Total War Saga: Troy Campaign Map and Heroes
The Total War Saga: Troy campaign map spans the entirety of the Aegean Sea which separates Greece and Anatolia, and of course, the lands on either side. In a similar manner to Total War: Three Kingdoms, the Troy campaign map evidently contains artistic flourishes based on artwork from the era. In this case, the sky above the map is inspired by Greek pottery, for instance. The map video gives an overview of key locations on the map, including Sparta, Mycenae, and the city of Troy itself.
This overview of the Trojan War’s backstory also serves to introduce at least five of the game’s eight playable heroes. This includes four Greek heroes; Menelaus, Agamemnon, Achilles, and Odysseus, together with Hector at Troy. While Paris is mentioned on a few occasions, it was left unclear whether he will be one of the eight heroes. (Although, it is quite likely. Odysseus appears in the trailer carrying a bow, and Paris would make sense as a counterpart Trojan archer hero.)
At present, Total War Saga: Troy has no firm release date. Creative Assembly has only revealed that the game will be coming sometime in 2020. As such, this first campaign map reveal is likely to show the map as it stands now, partway through development. It would be natural to assume that there will be some changes and refinements between now and release. Or indeed, even between now and the next gameplay trailer released by the studio. For now, however, the confirmation of Troy being the next Total War setting seems to have generated a great deal of excitement from the community at large.
