The Furious Wild, which will be launching tomorrow on PC, is the first so-called “Expansion Pack” DLC for Total War: Three Kingdoms. As distinct from previous Chapter Packs, The Furious Wild will be the game’s largest DLC to date, bringing the long-awaited Nanman faction to the game as an entirely new and distinct group.
Total War: Three Kingdoms – The Furious Wild DLC
Among the various requests which fans have had for Total War: Three Kingdoms, the Nanman are probably the addition which has been most-requested, going back all the way to the game’s launch last year. Although the barbarian tribes of Southern China played a relatively small part in the Three Kingdoms period, they are very different to the northern factions, and Zhuge Liang’s famous campaign to pacify their rebellion is a particularly distinct part of the lore.
A free update launching alongside The Furious Wild includes Total War: Three Kingdom’s first major map rework. This change features a significant expansion of the south-west to make space for the new Nanman factions. The Nanman will appear in game regardless of whether you buy the DLC or not. However, you won’t be able to play as them without purchasing The Furious Wild. The Expansion Pack DLC features four new playable Nanman rulers. Most well known is Meng Huo, leader of the Nanman during Zhuge Liang’s Southern Campaign. Players will also be able to start as Lady Zhurong, King Shamoke, and King Mulu.
As a distinct faction in the manner of the Yellow Turbans, the Nanman feature an entirely unique tech tree, new faction mechanics, and a totally new roster of units. Most notably, this roster includes several jungle beasts, including tigers and war elephants. Units such as these should make the Nanman very different to play as… and fight against. At present, the Furious Wild DLC is 10% off on Steam. However, this offer ends on launch day, so fans looking for a discount should pre-order soon!
