Ubisoft Provides Cryptic Details on The Division 2’s Raid Experiences

Ubisoft has big plans for The Division 2’s endgame, including the addition of an entire new enemy faction. Along with endgame missions and the Dark Zone, The Division 2 will also include a special raid mission type. How exactly The Division 2’s raids will function isn’t yet known, but Ubisoft says its hoping to surprise the playerbase.

The Division 2 Endgame Raids

Those who played The Division might remember that it actually had raid-esque endgame activities called Incursions. Incursions were basically supped up 6-player PvE missions which challenged players with both tough enemy encounters and puzzle mechanics. However, none of The Division’s Incursions wound up being super complex, and most simply devolved into extended horde mode sequences. Indeed, as time went on Incursions become more of an afterthought that were all but abandoned in later content updates.

The Division 2 raid details

For The Division 2, Ubisoft went back to the drawing board and came up with a new endgame PvE concept. The Division 2’s raids utilize the same terminology found in MMO games and shooters like Destiny 2. However, as lead designer Keith Evans recently explained to EDGE Magazine, The Division 2’s raids will feel wholly unique:

“[Raids are] totally different to what we did in the first game. I can say that it’s something we’ve been working on for a long time. It’s not at the level of a mission, where it’s just about upping the intensity – we want this to be something that even players who own the best gear have to jump in and really discover.”

Evans didn’t go into further detail, but his brief description certainly sounds intriguing. It sounds like The Division 2’s raids won’t just be about surviving difficult enemy waves. Our guess is that Ubisoft is putting a greater emphasis on navigation and solving environmental puzzles.

It should also be noted that, unlike The Division’s Incursions, raids will support up to eight players. Designing unique and memorable encounters with eight players in mind isn’t easy, but Ubisoft should be up to the task.
