Ubisoft to Correct “Inaccurate” List of Backward-Incompatible PS4 Games

The PlayStation 5 is coming out on November 12 and it’s been all the rage ever since Sony announced it. The company is preparing for high demands through pre-orders and the official release — which Sony states will not be available in stores on release day. With every new console, gamers want to know which older games will still be still playable on the PS4, or backward-compatible.

Ubisoft recently put out a list of PS4 games that gamers would not be able to play on the PS5, stating that the games were backward-incompatible. However, the video game company soon took down the list, leading to confusion and speculation about the upcoming release.

Which games will you be able to play on the PS5?

Ubisoft’s List

At the end of October, Ubisoft posted a list of nine PS4 video games that it claimed gamers would not be able to play on the new PS5. Shortly after, though, the page vanished and was no longer available. Questions soon arose about why the company took down the page.

Ubisoft later told “The Verge” in an email that “We have pulled the Ubisoft Connect article and forum post regarding backward compatibility for the time being as there may be inaccuracies involving the Ubisoft titles that will be playable on PS5.”

On the list, the nine games were:

  • “Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate”
  • “Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles Trilogy Pack”
  • “Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles India”
  • “Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles China”
  • “Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles Russia”
  • “Risk”
  • “Space Junkies”
  • “Star Trek: Bridge Crew”
  • “Werewolves Within”

Now that Ubisoft has taken down the page, fans and gamers are uncertain if the action means these games will be playable on the PS5 or not. It’s possible that Ubisoft needs to add more or take some away — however, the company provided no further comment for the time being.

Still, these are big titles for the PS4. Will backward-incompatibility deter you from buying a PS5? Would you rebuy the games you already have for the PS4?

The list that Ubisoft provides also differs from the one that Sony posted.

Sony Backward-Compatibility

Though Sony and Ubisoft often collaborate, Ubisoft does not exclusively make games for PlayStation consoles. Thus, Sony released its own list of PS5 backward-incompatible games for the PS4 as well. However, this list has stayed up and is seemingly accurate.

On Sony’s list, you’ll see the following games are for PS4 only:

  • “Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One”
  • “DWVR”
  • “Hitman Go: Definitive Edition”
  • “Joe’s Diner”
  • “Just Deal With It!”
  • “Robinson: The Journey”
  • “Shadow Complex Remastered”
  • “Shadwen”
  • “TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2”
  • “We Sing”

Sony does make a note that this list may change over time. The gaming company also states that other PS4 games may encounter errors when you play them on the PS5. Regardless, this list arguably doesn’t include as popular titles as Ubisoft’s did.

It will now be interesting to see how Ubisoft updates its list. The company states that an updated list will be coming soon, but no word on an exact date yet. With the release of the PS5 happening next week, Ubisoft should act quickly to put out accurate information for consumers.

Deciding Factors

The hype around the PS5 has been growing for months. Ever since its announcement in 2019, this platform has been the center of attention in the gaming world. Now, with gamers questioning backward-compatibility, it could sway purchases.

Are any of your favorite games on either Ubisfot’s or Sony’s list? The “Assassin’s Creed” games, in particular, are something to keep your eye on. With the continued success of this series, the potential incompatibility with the PS5 could dissuade fans from buying the new platform.

Still, Ubisoft and Sony have over 4,000 other games available on the PS4 that you can play on the new platform. The rollout of the new PlayStation console is sure to be one of the biggest ever. What are you most looking forward to?
