On the 7th of May, Bethesda will launch Patch 9 for Fallout 76 together with “Ever Upwards!” the final content pack for Wild Appalachia. In addition to the Pioneer Scouts, a whole new faction, the update is bringing the Fallout 76 Backpack. This item can be gained during the Pioneer Scout quest-line, and it offers players a whole lot of practical advantages.
What Does the Fallout 76 Backpack Actually Do?
The Fallout 76 Backpack is much more than just a cosmetic item. While the pack is highly customisable, it could well become one of the most useful items in the entire game. Indeed, fans of the game will no doubt quickly put them to use, as they offer some advantages which currently can’t be gained anywhere else. According to a recent teaser of the update on Bethesda’s website, the backpack is a modular item; players will be able to both customise them and install special mods.
“You can also apply one of several functional mods to your backpack so that it’s better suited to the needs of your next big excursion,” explains Bethesda; “A few of the mods that you can learn to craft include: increased carry capacity (it is a backpack, after all), armour plating for more damage resistance, and even a refrigeration unit, which will give any food within some added shelf-life.”
According to Bethesda, installing these mods are highly useful, but there is a trade-off. Many details about how it works are still unknown, of course. However, it sounds as though the backpack will provide players with a carry weight bonus rather than functioning as a separate container. Regardless, each mod that a player installs will take up some of that space, reducing its carry weight bonus. Interestingly, it sounds as though there will be different types of backpack in the game too; “Whenever you learn a new backpack mod it will apply to all types of backpacks you can craft,” explains Bethesda; “so you won’t need to re-learn mods every time you try out a different pack.”
