Developers have had a lot to say about the solid state drives to be included in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett. Whether they are talking about how PS5 lets them “focus on what is the most fun” or allows large battles to play smoothly, developers are in agreement that the SSD technology makes these things possible. And now, Ivan Pabiarzhyn of My.Games, the Warface developer has chimed in regarding the SSD in both forthcoming consoles.
What the Warface Developer Said About the SSD in PS5 and Xbox Scarlett
Pabiarzhyn says that the drives are the “most important improvement” for both PS5 and Xbox Scarlett. Describing their capabilities, he told GamingBolt in detail why developers have struggled to create detailed, smooth game levels (and open worlds in particular) on the current gen consoles. These problems result from the fact that the “performance of the disk subsystem is the narrowest bottleneck of the current generation.”
He then explained that in PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, “SSD solves this problem. You can think of SSD as an extension of RAM. Levels should load faster, drawing distances can be increased. It should also allow developers to get rid of such a rudiment as a ‘loading screen’ and make the game as seamless as possible. Fast streaming allows making larger game worlds with richer content locations.”
So, you can picture what this might translate to in terms of real-life experience. Think about what happens when you try to walk quickly through an open world environment. You can watch the details “filling in” in front of your eyes. But with the draw distance increased, this “filling in” may be less obvious. You may be able to see a greater amount of detail across the broad game environment. This should also make vast views from high points on the map less of a disappointment, and perhaps even properly impressive.
