We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games recently hosted a Reddit AMA in which it fielded questions on a number of different topics, including the severe technical issues that took a lot of wind out of the game’s launch period sails. Another topic that was addressed was the post-launch support that Compulsion has planned for We Happy Few, support which will come in the form of free content updates, two smaller paid DLC packs, and a major DLC expansion that will build off of the core game’s story ramifications.
When asked about the future content plans for We Happy Few, producer Sam Abbot talked about how three paid DLC packs are being developed, with two of those packs being smaller side-adventures while the third pack is a larger expansion that will tie into the base game’s narrative:
“We have three DLC packs planned to keep our content teams busy. These will be two smaller side stories in Wellington Wells, and one that will deal more with the ramifications of the main We Happy Few story.”
This echoes Compulsion’s previous unveiling of the We Happy Few season pass which will grant access to all three DLC packs as they’re released. The specific contents of each DLC pack haven’t yet been revealed, but judging from their teaser descriptions it sounds like they’ll feature, at the least, new playable characters, new districts of Wellington Wells, and new enemy types.
As for free content updates, Compulsion is prepping a sandbox mode that will strip out the story elements and allow players to experience an endless survival scenario with highly customizable modifiers (including the option to play as a ‘wellie.’ According to Abbot, the sandbox mode update should ideally launch before the end of 2018:
“So sandbox mode will be a free update that will come towards the end of this year. We had to push it back a bit because we couldn’t finish that and the story in time for release. Sandbox will have a few rulesets, like more traditional survival or playing as a wellie (wellie mode).”
Lastly, Abbot said that Compulsion also wants to patch in the option for players to adjust the game’s difficulty while in-game. Just such a feature has technically been constructed already, but Compulsion wasn’t able to sufficiently test its stability before We Happy Few’s launch date.
