What Does Split-Screen Co-op Mean For Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout?

A few hours ago, it was confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will include split-screen coop while offline. There’s no clear statement if this will work on the live version of the game at some point, this might be huge if it happens though. This raises questions. Will Blackout get the feature as well? And if so, can it really work in such a mode?

Over at Reddit, a fan has posted a picture of Blackout having split-screen. We can’t know for sure if it’s legit but it’s intriguing nonetheless. Who wouldn’t want to play a game of Blackout with a friend without two consoles? No battle royale titles has done that up until now. With the expectation bar set high, the new Call of Duty mode has to take every innovation into testing.

Blackout Split Screen

Treyarch has been testing split-screen in Black Ops 4 for a couple of months now. It makes sense to be used in Zombies and maybe in multiplayer but, what about Blackout?

Being aware of your teammate’s location and status is key in such games. Many times in battle royale games, one player says “man i’m here, come revive me” and you’re searching behind boxes and walls to find him. The same goes for shooting. Remember the feeling when your teammate says “I see him, shoot”? You’re trying to figure out where he/she points at and terribly fail to do so. Split-screen can help in that matter.

Additionally, split-screen enhancing the social experience in Call of Duty. Playing with friends doesn’t only mean partying up and logging into Discord. Being able to sit on the couch and have some fan is also important for friends in such games. Kudos to Treyarch for making that happen. Now for the bad part:

Split-screen Coop in Blackout could mean a huge graphics downgrade on consoles

Inevitably, playing in split-screen in Blackout could mean that you’ll face a huge downgrade in graphics. It’s almost impossible, even for a studio like Treyarch to replicate such a huge map and put it into one screen. This might be a short draw though, since you’ll be getting so much in return. If this is a limit for you, you can always play the classic way. Two screens, two consoles and lots of power need.

For now, split-screen co-op has been spotted only on consoles and only for the offline mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. We’ll be back with more news on the feature, as soon as the game releases.
