Earlier today, DICE released the new Battlefield 5 Operation Underground map, beginning the first week of Battlefest 2019. Set in the underground train stations and tunnels of a war-torn German City, this map offers a totally new experience for Battlefield 5. As players get stuck into the fast-paced combat of Operation Underground for the first weekly challenge, here’s what you can expect from this classic map homage.
The New Battlefield 5 Operation Underground Map
“A spiritual successor to Battlefield 3’s Operation Metro, Operation Underground is a true passion project when it comes to level design,” explains DICE; “With our original designer of Metro at the helm, Operation Underground keeps the former map’s intense close-quarter combat in a highly recognisable environment and removes bottlenecks that could make a match stale. In addition, new flanking routes and gameplay dynamics are added to double down on the fun.”
As per DICE’s classifications, Operation Underground is a ‘Small’-size map, with a “Fast and Chaotic” tempo. Of course, it only features infantry, with no vehicles of any kind. At present, the map is available for the Breakthrough, Conquest, Squad Conquest, and Team Deathmatch game modes. However, when Rush is once again available to play in Battlefield 5, it will also be available for Operation Underground. Whatever the mode, however, players can expect combat in this new map to be frenetic, favouring close-range weapons and squad-centric teamwork.
The map features three Capture Points; the Crossroads (A), Train Station (B), and Plaza (C). The Crossroads is the Allied starting area, while the Plaza is the starting position for the German forces. The Train Station, meanwhile, is a centre-point likely to be the focus of the fighting. “The area will be familiar to fans of Operation Metro-style gameplay,” says DICE; “but with more flanking routes! Prepare for occasional floods, opening and closing access to handy shortcuts”. Indeed, as the map trailer showed, players can swim through flooded corridors in order to get behind enemy forces.
