All basic announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 DLC, apart from free updates with new content, are confirmed to be locked behind a paywall this year by Treyarch and Activision. Not only that but fans will have to buy the Season Pass if they want to get the DLC. What would happen to the title if that wasn’t happening though?
It’s commonly known that free DLC are usually of less quality than the ones we see up for a small price. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is part of the franchise’s flagship series so quality of content is extremely important. Having less and more poor DLC maps would have meant problems for the game and constant nagging from the community.
Splitting the DLC would be an issue too. If two categories of players (Season Pass owners and base game owners) are already being the center of complaint in the community imagine what would happen if that was split into 5-6 different DLC owners. Imagine Treyarch releasing 4 future DLC. That makes future DLC maps available to 16 different categories of players, as Reddit user Benji Dread pointed out. This divides the community to so many smaller pieces with no actual benefit to neither sides.
Another huge problem that Benji Dread’s port indicates is the extensive use of microtransactions and lootboxes. If the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 DLC were supposed to be free then that means that there’s no profit for Treyarch and Activision after the base game price. This would mean more microtransactions for the players to raise revenue, which only makes the situation even worse.
