How to Get the Witcher: Enhanced Edition for Free

Fans of The Witcher have a new opportunity to delve into the franchise’s roots thanks to GOG.com. The digital distributor has introduced a deal whereby users can download a copy of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for free.

Originally released in 2007, The Witcher was CD Projekt Red’s first game. It was also the first title in the now highly-successful Witcher franchise. The “Enhanced Edition,” however, was released in late 2008, and featured a swathe of changes and improvements. In addition to new in-game content, the edition featured improved stability, better translations for dialogue, and vastly reduced loading times.

Of course, like most things that purport to be free, accessing the game does require following a process. The first thing is that prospective players must own and download a copy of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, on GOG.com. Fortunately, Gwent is also free-to-play. In addition to having Gwent installed, players must also have a subscription to GOG’s newsletter on their registered account. While this step is required, it is worth noting that you can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.

Once those steps are complete, you can download The Witcher: Enhanced Edition for free on GOG’s website. The distributor is even throwing in a Gwent Card Keg as an added incentive for downloading the game. When opened, the Keg provides Gwent players with five new cards for use in the game.

New players looking to get into The Witcher series may find this to be a good starting point. Indeed, many fans who entered the franchise with the The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, or The Witcher II: Assassin of Kings, may also find this a good opportunity to go back to the game that started it all. While CD Projekt Red reportedly has no plans to make a Witcher IV, fans of the series can look forward to The Witcher Netflix series, which may be planned for a 2020 release.
