At last, after months of waiting, Netflix has officially confirmed the exact release date of their upcoming Witcher series. The show, which stars Henry Cavill in the leading role as Geralt of Rivia, was set for a December release. However, the exact date was unknown. Now, thanks to a new “main trailer” released online earlier today, we now know that the Netflix Witcher series release date is the 20th of December.
The Witcher Netflix Series Release Date and Main Trailer
The main trailer is the second full trailer for the Witcher Netflix series which has been released so far, and it gives fans a better look at Geralt himself than the first one did. Indeed, this is the first time that fans have actually heard the Witcher speak; none of his voice lines were actually included in the first trailer. Thus far, the reaction to the trailer seems to have been enormously positive. At the time of writing, the trailer has over 162,000 likes on YouTube, compared to only 4,600 dislikes.
For those who are unfamiliar, the upcoming series is based on the original Witcher novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. (Not CD Projekt Red’s game series.) As such, the characters are much younger than how they appear in the games, which take place after the novels. This also means that fans of the games should expect to see plenty of new characters who never make appearances in the games; individuals like Vilgefortz, Cahir, and Milva, for example.
Interestingly, the newly announced release date (the 20th of December) is very close to a release date which was accidentally leaked last month. Netflix’s Dutch social media account posted a Tweet, which was deleted soon after, listing the number of nights before the release of several upcoming series. (Including that of The Witcher.) That tweet had the series releasing on the 18th of December; not quite correct, but certainly very close.
