Sometimes change is good, but other times it is something people despise. In the case of the new WWE 2K20 control scheme, it’s the latter, as a number of fans are freaking out on Tuesday (Oct. 15) upon the reveal. WWE 2K unveiled images showing how the new Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controller layouts will be, with many gamers expressing their displeasure.
WWE 2K20 control scheme images for PS4, Xbox One controllers
After a bunch of new gameplay videos arrived Monday, a pair of WWE 2K20 control scheme images arrived on social media on Tuesday. The images show fans what to expect with the new game controls. Here’s a look at the PlayStation 4’s new controller layout in the WWE 2K20 game.
And a look at how the WWE 2K20 control scheme will be for the Xbox One controller this year. As you can see, it is quite a change from how the layout has been over the years.
2K explains how new layouts improve the game
The WWE 2K folks also added several subtweets to go with the WWE 2K20 controller scheme images. The subtweets were notes to talk about how this new layout helps make things better.
Here are 2K’s various tweet notes:
- The new control scheme reduces friction and the likelihood that players will perform the wrong action.
- Object interaction and climbing are on separate buttons, making it easier for you to perform the action you intend.
- Reversal windows are now authored by designers and fire more immediately, helping them look and feel more responsive.
- You no longer need to grab opponents in a Front Facelock to do a standing Submission. You can walk right up to them and apply the hold.
- The new “Assist Mode” option helps new players experience the variety of their character’s move-set. When you perform a Strong Strike or Grapple, an A.I. system will choose a specific attack for you, sometimes sequencing a reposition before the move.
- A.I. opponents utilize all of their Signature and Finisher slots so there is more variety in how they attempt to finish matches.
In particular, those final two notes seem they could make a nice difference in gameplay. Less experienced gamers who are just getting into WWE 2K will have a way to experience more of their superstar’s moves. In addition, a lot of the ways that A.I. opponents won their matches in WWE 2K19 came with the same moves. So that will provide some uniqueness to the matches.
Community reacts to new controller layouts
As mentioned, gamers weren’t applauding the changes to new controller layouts. Players’ reactions to the new WWE 2K20 control scheme images were mostly asking “why?” or demanding for 2K to give an option to revert back to previous controls.
Twitter user DavieC726 asked in a comment on 2K’s tweet, “Can we please have a classic control option? Or remapping option?”
Another Twitter commenter asked, “Can these be reverted back to old controls as an option or not. I think for veteran WWE game players the older controls were a lot easier and engrained into our brains than this.”
A commenter said a YouTuber revealed that there will, in fact, be such an option in the game. That’s a good thing as it seemed many gamers in the WWE 2K community were ready to go full heel against the developers based on learning of the new controller layout.
