After a one-year hiatus, 2K Sports is bringing back a professional wrestling game. During the past weekend’s WrestleMania 37 pay-per-view in Tampa, Florida, a brand new WWE 2K22 teaser trailer arrived giving fans a glimpse of what’s on the way. While it only offered a few superstars, it still has people excited for the possibilities of a retooled pro wrestling sim title. Here’s what we know so far about 2K22.
WWE 2K22 teaser trailer shows two superstars, in-ring action
WWE presented their annual WrestleMania pay-per-view across two nights with a variety of matches. They included Randy Orton vs. The Fiend, Seth Rollins vs. Cesaro, and a triple threat match for the Universal title. The event streamed live exclusively on Peacock and showed a WWE 2K22 teaser trailer during the first night. That officially announced the WWE 2K22 game is on the way.
In the trailer, fans see Rey Mysterio donning one of his colorful masks in real-life footage. Soon after, shots are shown of his in-game WWE 2K22 look. In addition to Rey Mysterio, Cesaro is also shown off in the teaser trailer. From there, the two are involved in a brief bit of in-ring action from the game. Fans get to see Mysterio connect on his famous 610, kicking Cesaro, who is lying on the middle rope.
A note on the screen during gameplay and character footage indicates it’s a “work-in-progress build” so nothing is finalized yet.
While it’s only a WWE 2K22 teaser trailer, it should get fans excited after a disappointing previous title. The WWE 2K20 game brought plenty of negative reviews due to glitches and gameplay issues. It currently rates at 57 out of 100 for Xbox One and 60 out of 100 for PlayStation 4 at the Metacritic website.
2K20 was the first game in the series not developed by Yukes, who had published every game in the WWE series since 2000. Instead, it was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K.
Due to the negative reception, they never released a WWE 2K21, and instead brought out WWE 2K Battlegrounds, a much different game.
New game’s release date, platform details
Right now, all that fans have seen is that teaser trailer above, with WWE 2K also saying “More details coming soon” in the video description on YouTube. Presumably, the coming weeks and months will give more trailers, promos, and online teases about the upcoming game.
The last WWE game that came out was the WWE 2K Battlegrounds title which was more of a cartoonish, arcade-style fighting game. While there were fans who seemed to enjoy it, many others were craving WWE 2K22.
Battlegrounds was available on Sony’s PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and Windows PCs. Presumably, the new WWE 2K22 game will be available on the current-gen consoles, but also built for the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to take advantage of their upgrades.
As for an official release date, that is currently unknown. However, WWE 2K Battlegrounds release date was September 18, 2020. The last sim game, WWE 2K20, was released on October 22, 2019. So it’s possible that WWE 2K22 could be release around those months, but based on the teaser trailer just hitting, it could be even sooner.
