Are single player games dying? It is a question which gamers ask with regularity nowadays. Over the past few years, the focus has moved more and more toward multiplayer games. So, many gamers have wondered if single player games will fade into becoming a thing of the past. But gamers on Xbox systems can breathe a sigh of relief. Xbox head Phil Spencer has just spoken up about the future of single player games on Xbox, and it’s good news.
What Phil Spencer Said About Future Xbox Single Player Games
Recently, a user on Twitter asked the following question:
“can you at least tell me more single player games are coming to Xbox in the years to come?”
Phil Spencer then tweeted the following:
His text reads, “Yes, I can confirm. With the additions to XGS we have a lot of teams that have built strong SP focused games and we want that to continue.”
Microsoft has been making a lot of developer acquisitions lately, snapping up companies like Double Fine Productions, Obsidian Entertainment, inXile Entertainment, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, Playground Games and Compulsion Games. Along with these, Microsoft also has launched a studio named The Initiative. There are now a total of 15 teams across the Xbox Games Studios (XGS).
So while Phil Spencer did not have anything to say regarding specific types of single player games in our future, what we can do is look over this list and make some guesses about what we can expect based on past releases from those development teams.
Double Fine Productions, for example, was created by Tim Schafer, who is known for creating the puzzle adventure game Grim Fandango, a classic from 1998. Meanwhile, Obsidian Entertainment is known for their work on Fallout: New Vegas and their forthcoming game The Outer Worlds. So we could see quite a lot of variety in single player games in the future for Xbox platforms.
