After a successful start for the XFL’s 2020 return to the field, speculation has been going on about the potential for a video game title. The latest XFL video game rumors are suggesting that the league is already in talks with possible developers. There’s also speculation that popular sports game creator 2K is in the lead to land the deal to make the game.
XFL video game rumors arrive with mock cover on Instagram
So how did the recent rumors get going? Thanks to the internet, with murmurs here or there and plenty of imaginative ideas from avid fans. An Instagram post arrived just days ago from @videogames which is a large source for online video game news and rumors. That post featured a “mock” cover for the Xbox version of a potential XFL video game. On the cover is not only the league’s name but also “2K20” right next to it.
The caption for the image says, “The XFL are in talks with companies to make a XFL football game. 2K is rumored to be the frontrunners.”
2K is known for several popular sports games over the years including the recent NBA 2K20 and WWE 2K20 titles. The fact they are associated with the WWE title could bode well for them landing a deal. WWE CEO Vince McMahon originally launched the XFL back in 2001 but it failed to make it beyond one season. It was criticized for being too associated with McMahon’s WWE gimmicks.
Despite the failed league, he was still determined to succeed in using his concept. McMahon brought it back with an all-new format and new teams for 2020 with the season starting two weeks ago. It’s seemed to generate fan interest based on attendance and rating numbers. A popular football video game could bring more interest and excitement if it’s created well.
There was reported speculation of a potential video game being considered last summer. Several weeks ago, ahead of the league’s debut, SportsGamersOnline reported that they asked 2K for comment about the possibility and were told, “We do not comment on rumors speculation.” Despite there being no confirmation, the rumors are still going strong with the league underway in 2020.
XFL has just eight teams and competition
Many people feel that maybe the league doesn’t have enough teams for an XFL video game title just yet. There are just eight teams in the league at the moment, with them based in major sports markets. Those teams are the Dallas Defenders, DC Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, New York Guardians, Seattle Dragons, St. Louis BattleHawks, and Tampa Bay Vipers. There’s always the potential for expansion to other cities, should the league last past a season or more.
It’s worth noting that 2K doesn’t have a football title amongst their current offerings. There’s major competition as EA Sports’ Madden franchise continues to dominate.
Just over the past year, a new Doug Flutie Maximum Football game also arrived but still has yet to put much of a dent into EA’s Madden success. However, they are making strides by offering college-style players and teams along with the CFL.
The Doug Flutie game originally arrived in digital form last year. Just this past February, they made physical copies of the game available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Potential for XFL game is there if done right
While the Flutie series isn’t hurting EA’s football title, many fans in the Madden gaming community want another football game. While many are asking for a college football game, an XFL video game could make a lot of sense. There are a number of former college players participating in the league, showing their skills.
Even with eight teams, there could always be the potential to have features similar to Madden where gamers can create their own franchises to use with expansion and in simulated leagues.
As of right now, there’s no official word on an XFL title coming to the market in 2020. The league has already completed two weeks of the 10-week regular-season schedule. There will also be a short playoffs to determine the 2020 champion.
So far, it seems unlikely a game will arrive anytime soon. However, other sports games tend to release around September or later including NBA 2K20 and WWE 2K20, giving it a slight possibility.
However, most gamers who received the new WWE title last October were unhappy with the way the game arrived on its release date. It was full of glitches and issues. This was due to the fact 2K parted ways with their longtime developer. Having to put an XFL video game together quickly in 2020 could go bad based on the timeframe.
Still, the sports gaming community seems ready to welcome another football title as an option. It’s up to 2K or whoever might land a deal to create the best XFL video game possible.
