If you purchase a PS4 version of a game that includes a free PS5 upgrade, you probably imagine that you will be able to pick up where you left off on your new system. But is that true? Maybe not. According to one journalist, you might not be able to transfer all PS4 saves to your PS5 upgraded versions of games.
What to Know About Transferring PS4 Saves to PS5 Upgraded Games
Have a look at this tweet from Washington Post journalist Gene Park:
The image in the tweet shows his original deleted tweet. It said, āhearing a lot from different devs that PS4 saves wonāt work on PS5. Xbox Series X seems to bring your old save files with you. Sony may have the exclusives now, but for me, thereās a lot of value knowing that my Fable 2 save from Xbox 360 will still work on Xbox Series X.ā
The text of this tweet includes an update. Park writes, ādeleted this tweet because I noticed it was quickly getting interpreted as any confirmation about how save states will work for PS4 to PS5. Itās not strictly about back compat, itās about PS5 upgrades like Spider-Man: Miles, Yakuza.ā
So, that news isnāt awesome. Does it apply to all PS5 game upgrades? Not necessarily. He simply said that he was āhearing a lot from different devs.ā It is hard to say if those devs told him this would be a universal problem, or if certain devs simply said it would be a problem for their games. Either way, it is something to consider before you start a lengthy game on PS4 if you plan to continue it on PS5. In some cases, holding off and just buying the PS5 version to begin with might be a smarter move.
