September is now behind us, and as we head into October we are also heading into one of the busiest months of the year for new game releases. September – November is usually the busiest launch window of the year, and even though 2019 is a somewhat quiet year given the impending launch of a new console generation in 2020, there are still some major titles to watch out for. Chief amongst the upcoming October game releases, fans will certainly be clamouring for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but there’s plenty more coming to platforms in the next 31 days as well. This list won’t include every single release, but it will cover all of those games we think are particularly worth watching out for.
October Game Releases: From the 1st to the 10th
Kicking off the list of October game releases isn’t actually a new game but a major expansion; Destiny 2: Shadowkeep. This huge expansion is coming to all platforms on the 1st of October, bringing plenty of new content and changes both to the first-person shooter. Just a few days later, gamers should look out for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, the latest entry in Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon franchise. That title will be coming to PC and consoles on the 4th.
With those two major releases out of the way, gamers have several smaller titles to look out for. John Wick Hex, a hex-based strategy game adaptation of the movie series, is coming to PC on the 8th of October. Also on the 8th, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince and Trine: Ultimate Collection are coming to all platforms, including the Switch. In fact, the World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is also out on the 8th! The next day, PlayStation owners will be getting Concrete Genie, a graffiti-inspired action-adventure game for the PS4 and PSVR.
October Game Releases: From the 11th to the 20th
Following on from the first third of the month, gamers can look out for two older games making their way to new platforms. Firstly, Frostpunk will be getting a console edition on the 11th of October, and then DayZ will be getting a console retail edition on the 15th. Also on the 15th, RPG fans should look out for Disco Elysium, an open-world detective RPG from ZA/UM. It has been described as one of the most original RPGs in years, and could be one of the standout hits of October 2019. Also on the 15th, both Overwatch and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be making their way to the Switch.
On the 18th of October, Respawn is launching two new retail editions of Apex Legends, presumably as a promotional effort for their third season, launching on the 1st (the game is still free-to-play, but the retail editions include in-game currency and exclusive cosmetics). Also on the 18th, Nintendo is launching the innovative Ring Fit Adventure; a new fitness game for the Switch which features a new “Ring-Con” accessory.
October Game Releases: From the 21st to the 31st
As we move towards the end of October, sports fans may wish to look out for WWE 2K20, which will be coming to PC and consoles on the 22nd. Three days after that is the release which will almost certainly be the biggest event of the October gaming calendar; the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Certainly, that title will be dominating headlines both throughout October and no doubt into November as well.
The 25th isn’t just the release date for Modern Warfare, however, and there are some titles worth watching out for in that game’s shadow. PlayStation will be releasing the remake of MediEvil for the PS4, for example; a remake of the classic 1998 title. Obsidian Entertainment will also be launching The Outer Worlds on the 25th, a game which RPG fans should certainly watch out for. Rounding out the month, the Switch will be getting several ports, including Resident Evil 5 and 6, followed by Luigi’s Mansion 3, the first new entry in that series since 2013.
Looking Ahead to November
Following on from October, the November game release calendar is also likely to be one of the busiest of 2019. The biggest title, without a doubt, is of course Death Stranding, which will be launching on the 8th. However, there’s plenty coming for gamers, regardless of their preferences. November 2019’s launch schedule will include titles like Shenmue 3, Doom Eternal, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Pokemon Sword and Shield.
Of course, it will also feature the launch of Google Stadia; a major new contender in the gaming market. It remains to be seen how well gaming fans will take to Stadia, but the prospects are high. Even if the platform fails to find a gaming audience at the console level, it could still shake up the mobile gaming market significantly. Certainly, that will be a release to watch throughout the end of 2019.
