Despite the presence of online leaderboards, the original Hitman was single-player only. However, such won’t be the case with the upcoming sequel Hitman 2. Not only will the game have a co-op Hitman Sniper component, developer Io Interactive has also unveiled a competitive mode. The 1v1 ‘Ghost Mode’ challenges two players to see which among them is the more skilled assassin.
Hitman 2 1v1 Ghost Mode Competitive Multiplayer
In each Ghost Mode match, two players enter the same randomized gameplay scenario. The players can see each other, but they also exist in their own personal realities. This means that actions (and their consequences) taken by one player don’t affect the other. Players must eliminate a series of random targets and the first to take out five targets wins the match. However, if an NPC witnesses an assassination it doesn’t count. This ensures that players can’t just rush through and gun down their targets out in the open.
Much like in the core game, players can use firearms, disguises, and improvised killing tools. Players can also find ‘ghost crates’ strewn around the level which contain vital supplies and weaponry. Players who can think on the fly will have a distinct advantage, but in-depth map knowledge certainly won’t hurt either.
When Hitman 2 launches next month, Ghost Mode will only be available for the game’s Miami location. Io Interactive will enable Ghost Mode for the game’s other locations sometime after launch.
So far only two new locations have been revealed for Hitman 2: a Miami racetrack and a Columbian village called Santa Fortuna. The original 2016 Hitman’s locations will also be remastered and made playable in the sequel.
Hitman 2 arrives on November 13 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Those who pre-order the game can sample the Hitman Sniper mode ahead of launch.
