PlayStation Plus Will Stop Offering Free PS3 and Vita Games Next Year
If you’re still mashing away on your PS3 or Vita, we recommend grabbing every free PlayStation Plus game for those systems now while you still can. Sony has just sent out an email to those subscribed to the service to let them know of the immense changes coming to the online service. The biggest change is the fact that, starting next year, PlayStation Plus users will no longer be able to download free PS3 and Vita games from the service.
This news comes by way of ResetEra user TheStebe who shared the email that was sent to him with this disappointing information.
PlayStation Plus will officially stop offering PS3 and Vita titles on March 8th, 2019. This will reduce the monthly games offered with the online service to only PS4 titles. The announcement of this is unfortunate for anyone who still regularly downloads the free games on PS3 and Vita.
The timing of this is rather interesting, given that we just reported on how the Vita, specifically, will continue to live on here in the West digitally and physically in Japan. Even though the physical production of games and potentially new hardware will end here, digital games will continue to be sold through the PlayStation Store. Unfortunately, you just won’t be able to get any free games starting in March 2019 for the system.
It is currently unknown if Sony will counteract this reduction in the number of total monthly games with more PS4 games each month. Interestingly enough, the email also has the strange wording of saying that beyond March 8th, 2019, monthly games will “only include PlayStation 4 titles.” We suspect that PS4 games include VR titles as has been the case recently for PlayStation Plus but that isn’t totally guaranteed right now.
Sony does make it clear, however, that no other changes will be made to the online features and services that are part of PlayStation Plus; only the free monthly games. Also, if you have any PS Plus Vita or PS3 games currently in your library, they will remain playable as long as you are subscribed. Because of this, we highly recommend that PS3 and Vita owners add all future free monthly games to their library before their end on March 8th, 2019.
