Rage 2’s recent QuakeCon 2018 gameplay trailer certainly managed to impress the crowd, but it also led to a new series of questions that fans now have on their minds. With Rage 2, developers id Software and Avalanche Studios are really driving home the theme of player freedom, but could that freedom one day extend to player-created mods?
During a QuakeCon interview with PC Gamer, id Software game director Tim Willits was asked about the subject of mods and whether they’d be enabled for Rage 2 when it launches next year. Willits responded by saying that mod support won’t be in the game at launch, but id recognizes how much some fans crave the use of mods, and thus the implementation of proper mod support is definitely on the studio’s radar:
“You know that at id Software we’re big into mods, so we know it’s important, we just haven’t figured out that roadmap yet.”
Later on in the interview, Willits also confirmed that Rage 2 will be a strictly single-player game (though there will be online social components), and both id and Avalanche are working hard to ensure that players get their money’s worth despite the lack of multiplayer:
“Obviously everyone always discusses it, but looking at what we want to do and what we want to accomplish, and what we’re offering and with the emergent gameplay and the open-world aspect of it, and our post-launch plans, we felt that we were creating a good offering.”
In a separate QuakeCon interview with Variety, Willits was asked about whether or not Rage 2 will ever come to the Nintendo Switch, and similar to his answer regarding mods, he managed to avoid giving a strict yay or nay answer by saying that id is looking into it.
Rage 2 doesn’t yet have a strict release date but it’s scheduled to launch sometime in spring, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
